OpenAI has introduced a more compact and efficient version of its most sophisticated AI model, known as o3-Mini, which is available at no cost. This launch comes as OpenAI aims to counteract the excitement surrounding a new offering from the Chinese AI startup DeepSeek.

According to insiders, OpenAI was preparing to launch the o3-Mini on January 31, following a December announcement. The company disclosed that its researchers have been diligently working to perfect this model.

The o3-Mini offers advanced AI reasoning capabilities, making it the most capable smaller model from OpenAI thus far. It excels in deconstructing complex problems into smaller, manageable parts to find effective solutions.

OpenAI stated, “This powerful and fast model advances the boundaries of what small models can achieve,” in the blog post revealing the availability of o3-Mini. It is accessible to ChatGPT Plus, Team, and Pro users, with limited access for free users.

Innovative Training and Recruitment

OpenAI has also engaged PhD students in training its new models. Recently, the company sought PhD candidates for a research collaboration through a company named Mercor.

A job listing indicated a focus on creating challenging coding problems to evaluate large language models. Such problems align with benchmarks like SciCode aimed to assess these models’ capacity to solve intricate scientific queries.

The DeepSeek Impact

DeepSeek’s R1 model poses significant competition within the US tech sector, putting pressure on major players like Google and Anthropic to reevaluate pricing. OpenAI is keen to bolster its standing in the AI commercialization space.

DeepSeek’s model, requiring fewer resources than its competitors, has drawn attention for its efficient training algorithms. OpenAI believes elements of its models’ output might have been used in R1’s training.
